History
The Stop Shop Save Corporation was founded by the Reverend, Dr. Henry T. Baines, Sr.
Henry Baines was born and raised in Wilson, North Carolina, the seventh of eleven children.
Young Henry was determined, driven and guided to rise above his birth surroundings and
conditions.
Born into a poor and disadvantaged, Southern Black family during a time when racial
discrimination was oppressive. Henry struggled to understand the circumstances of
his birth and conditions of his surroundings, but refused to accept those circumstances
as a way of life. Young Henry had a vision and a drive for a better life. When he graduated
from High School he left Wilson to seek a better life in Baltimore, Maryland.
Henry matured quickly as he took menial jobs, including that of a dishwasher in order to
survive. He was soon able to get a job as a stock clerk in a local Supermarket. Henry worked
hard and was soon recognized by the owners of that market as an extremely intelligent, hard
working and ambitious individual, with a strong desire to excel. Henry was promoted through
the ranks and achieved the position of Store Manager where he performed admirably.
Not being satisfied to be an Employee and reaching for his dream to be a success, Henry, now
a seasoned Manager of people and assets, decided to enter the world of business ownership.
So, in 1978, Henry Baines opened his first Market on the corner of Park Heights and Wylie
Avenues in Northwest Baltimore. That Market was the forerunner of today’s “Stop Shop Save
Food Markets”.
Stop Shop Save Food Markets is now one of the largest Minority owned retail chains in the
United States.
The existence of Stop Shop Save Food Markets stands as testament of entrepreneurship born
of one man’s desire, effort, determination and hard work. All of these attributes coupled
with his strong beliefs, led this man to take the opportunity to turn his dream into reality.
Mr. Baines credits his success to his upbringing by a strong and dedicated Mother who
provided spiritual mentoring and a strong set of life’s values. Following the course laid
down by his Mother, Mr. Baines responded to a calling to the Ministry.
Mr. Baines was purpose driven and earned his Masters Degree from the Howard University
School of Divinity. With the drive and determination to excel in his Spiritual Calling Mr. Baines
earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the United Theological Seminary of Dayton Ohio.
No small task under the best of circumstances but all of this was achieved while fulfilling his
duties and responsibilities as a successful business leader, Husband and Father.
In keeping with these values, Stop Shop Save Food Markets provides opportunity to hundreds
of Employees and their families. By developing and training its people, Stop Shop Save Food
Markets provides a positive force to the communities it serves while insuring our philosophy
and positive results carry us far into the future.
